Pregnant Neck - Scaffolder Olcer EP

Neckesque Records
NECK1 1990

1 - Pie and Mash
2 - Wasn't Told
3 - Silicone Implants
4 - One Scratch

The track order on the vinyl doesn't match the cover track list, so I've reordered it.

Noisy, clanky nonsense from Essex, like a down-at-heel Stump meets a sped-up Artphag with Swell Maps vocals.

  1. I played bass on two of these tracks, and your description is very flattering :)

  2. Nice one - I really like it, hence the inclusion on here. Hope you don't mind, since it isn't available anywhere. I just want to spread the joy of forgotten or overlooked music.

  3. Oh goodness no - I'm sure everyone involved would be totally happy to see it up here. It's long since totally unavailable.

Lee Thomas, the guitarist, sadly committed suicide in 1991. Paul Elliott - the singer - turned up in an episode of BBC2's "Look Around You" as Tony Parker aka "The Human Dustbin". So there you go!

  6. Hi,
I am Lee Thomas's sister. Its really nice to see that there is interest in Pregnant Neck and a mention of Lee. My mum, dad, sister and myself are chuffed that Lee and his music has not been forgotten. Big hello to any of the Pregnant Neck Band members.

  7. Wow Lou, what a turn up. It's good to see that not all music sharing is considered by those involved to be 'piracy'. I've been spending time meticulously transfering this unavailable music for just the reasons you mention. It shouldn't be forgotten.

  8. Thanks Mot - it means alot.

  9. Hello hello
Paul Elliott here. Singer of Pregnant Neck. I stumbled across this quite by accident. I've just downloaded the EP. Well done - I'm chuffed (and mentioned alongside Stump to boot).
Did we really mess up the order? Whoops. Maybe we did know at the time. It was all a bit cut and paste in those days. Glue and photocopiers. If anyone wants to post the album I'd be very happy.
    Keep up the good work.
    Paul

  13. Hi all - Si saspot Whaley here, played bass on a couple of these numbers then took over as drummer for the album. Nice to know it's still appreciated - and hi to Ant, long time no see. Playing for the Neck was very very scary. I loved it

  19. Hi All
And a very big Hi to Lucy and Luan - Hope you are well.
I have tracked down a copy of the album (in my cupboard - it was hard going). This is perhaps the last remnants of vinyl I have (except for another copy plus the single). Now how do I get it to you MOT/Vinyl Cock?
    Let us know your address.
You can face book me if you want.
    I live in Whitstable now.
    Paul (Elliott)

  21. you superstars! sorry not to reply sooner - been on the road for a week. i'm up to the neck (non-pregnant) in fatigue and whisky right now, but will respond with sense and gratitude as soon after sunrise as the past week's endeavours will allow.

  22. paul - FB wasn't giving me any likely hits for you. perhaps i'm banned from whitstable.

luan - if you could email me (skenkbiscuit@googlemail.com) i'll give you my details and sort out getting postage costs to you. it'd be very much appreciated, and of course i'll spend countless hours ensuring the finest vinyl to digital transfer. cheers.

  24. Thanks for putting this up...been looking for it. Having trouble downloading it...I still have a copy of their excellent album in great condition. They played a couple of gigs with my old band "Erick" in Harlow (I was their guitarist)...Lee was an exceptional guitarist with a huge armoury of weird distortions and mutant riffs...Abstract, absurd, poignant, psychedelic and deeply strange. How I imagined a band from Epping might sound like at the time...Like a cut up but without the splicing...massive tempo shifts, mood swings, the lot. Great lyrics too. I was just discussing them with my friend and ex Erick percussionist Clive Richards. Two of them went on to form the very psychedelic Slithey Tove...we played a few gigs with them too. A track from this EP posted on Youtube whetted my appetite...

  25. Hi all, I've just been watching "Pie & Mash" on Youtube & stumbled across this link again by accident... John Peel used to ADORE that track didn't he? Still sounds absolutely marvellous btw!

I used swap tapes (at a quite phenomenal rate!) with Lee "back in the day", they're all still shoeboxed away in my parents' attic. Never got to meet him as, by the time Pregnant Neck were booked to play here (Nottingham) he'd already passed on... x

Despite selling off vast chunks of my record collection over the last 2 decades, I've always clung onto the P.Neck 7" & LP, & definitely had/have a Pregnant Neck demo or 2 somewhere as well, I'll see if I can find them next time I'm back home (promise).

  30. Hi Mot, any chance we'll get that promised album-rip? :-)

    ReplyDelete
  31. it's on the list! i hadn't got round to it since there was a rip already (mediafire link above) but that seems to be dead. I'll probably get it done over xmas.

  32. We love reading this stuff - thanks guys - Lee's family.

  33. I've been given a vinyl copy of the album to sell - I'll have to listen to it first - but it'll be on ebay in a week or two. It came from the former owner of Bristol's greatest record shop - the hugely missed Revolver - so it's probably only been played once or twice.

  34. cheers stereolalalalalalalallalab, but i sent one to purplepeople aready (for free mind you, since luan was good enough to pass them on to me in the first place).

  35. Lee, many many thanks for the album, was lucky enough to play/support these guys in Scotland, haven't heard some of those tracks since, absolutely brilliant...

    ReplyDelete
  36. I, too, taped "Pie and Mash" (massive bass riff!) off John Peel. It was heartwarming and illuminating to read the comments on here. I shall track down the LP now...

    ReplyDelete
  37. i WILL rip the album soon. been mega busy, but have put it top of the list of things to do when my mad time finishes at the end of March.

  38. Hi folks...first of all, very sorry to hear of Lee's passing. After hearing Pregnant Neck on John Peel, immediately got the material and it was sent by Lee with several written notes as the EPs and cassettes came in. He scoffed at me liking The Wedding Present but perhaps he had a point :) Was looking forward to seeing Lee and the band in Stirling in I think, 1989, but they pulled out of the tour the night before. They were with Dawson and The Keatons who were indeed both excellent on the night and in their own right. Was the Dawson singer who explained about Pregnant Neck's absence. Such mischief and independence that PN had is lacking within today's music. Thank you to Pregnant Neck for the memories and again, sorry to hear about Lee, came across thst he was a really decent guy. Graeme from Alloa.
